Newborn Photos with a Main Line Photographer

Newborn portrait by Main Line photographer

As a Main Line photographer, I am fortunate enough to join families during one of the most special times in their lives. There is something incredibly special about capturing the first few days of a newborn’s life. The newborn stage feels like an eternity in some ways—the sleepless nights, the crying, the never-ending diapers—but then, in a few weeks, it’s over. That little, wrinkled baby becomes a smiling, drooling infant with rolls and personality emerging more each day. This is why it’s so important to capture the newborn weeks before they slip away into the haze of the early days.

Recently, I had the joy of photographing baby K, a precious baby girl who had just turned one week old on the day of her session. This little one actually had a due date five days after our session. She surprised her family by arriving early—just in time for the beginning of summer! Needless to say, she was tiny! I had photographed baby K’s older sister around the holidays and helped her parents announce their pregnancy. Since then, a lot has changed for this family of four. Not only did they welcome a new baby, but they also moved to a new home just a few weeks before the baby’s early arrival. On top of that, there was a career change in the family too! Despite so much change in a short amount of time, this family handled all these new beginnings like pros!

The two sisters are almost 18 months apart, and watching them together was a pure delight. There’s an endearing truth that all parents of multiple children know: when you come home from the hospital with your newborn, your first child suddenly seems so much bigger, as if they grew in just a few short days. Seeing the big sister interact with baby K was a testament to this phenomenon. She had grown so much since our last session only seven months before. It was heartwarming to document her first few days in her new role as big sister and to commemorate baby K’s arrival. The transition from a family of three to a family of four is profound, and these early days are filled with precious, fleeting moments.

Mom had that unmistakable new-mom glow, gracefully navigating the transition from one child to two. Her calm and collected demeanor was truly inspiring, and if you’ve experienced the jump from one to two, you know exactly what I mean. There’s an indescribable beauty in witnessing a mother seamlessly expand her heart and care to accommodate another little one. Dad, too, was ever-supportive, and his pride in his growing family was evident in every shot. You would never know this family was only in their first few days as a family of four!

As I edited the photos from this session, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to document such meaningful times. These images will serve as a timeless reminder of their new beginnings, the joy of welcoming baby K, and the love that binds them all together.

Hiring a Main Line newborn photographer can definitely be a daunting task. There are many different styles of newborn photography—posed, candid, lifestyle, and more. As a lifestyle photographer, my goal is to capture genuine moments from the early days and weeks of bringing home a new baby. During the actual newborn session, you can expect a calm and relaxed atmosphere focused on the comfort and safety of your baby. The goal is always to ensure your baby is comfortable. We will choose a spot in your home that gets good natural light. There will be plenty of time for feeding, changing, and soothing your newborn as we go, so there’s no need to worry about a strict schedule. It’s expected that newborn sessions will be longer than a typical photo session, and that’s totally okay! Typically, I plan to spend about one to two hours with the family.

Lifestyle newborn sessions typically involve the parents and siblings snuggling with the baby rather than strictly posing with a series of props. The idea is to capture a more realistic portrayal of a newborn at home with the family in the early days. There are no babies with angel wings in buckets here! The session is flexible and designed to be stress-free, allowing parents and siblings to naturally engage and be part of the experience. My goal is to capture photos of the parents and siblings engaging with the newborn both together and individually. I will also take photos of the baby’s tiny hands, feet, and sweet little cheeks. Many parents have a special newborn outfit they have chosen for their baby, while others opt to just swaddle the baby. By embracing a relaxed approach, we can capture the genuine, tender moments that make these photos so special.

As a Main Line photographer, I get to meet so many families at every life stage. Every family I photograph leaves a unique imprint on my heart, and this session was no exception. Here’s to new homes, new babies, and the beautiful journey of family life.
