Mini Sessions with a Lower Merion Photographer

Family photographs are priceless. They are sweet. They are a tangible way to preserve a memory. But they can also be expensive, require preparation and planning, as well as cooperation from all members of the family. Many families want these memories but hesitate when it comes to booking the session because, well, it’s a lot! As a Lower Merion photographer, I understand these concerns and am here to help you navigate your options.

If this sounds like you or your family, a great fit for you may be what is known in the photography world as the “mini session.” What’s a mini session? Well, a mini session is exactly what it sounds like – a mini or shortened session. My full sessions typically run about forty-five minutes to an hour. As a Lower Merion photographer, my mini sessions are short and sweet, lasting for a total of fifteen minutes!

Most photographers hold mini sessions during the busier seasons of fall and spring when many families are looking to do family photos. Mini sessions can also have themes for certain holidays. The winter holidays are usually some of the most popular themed mini sessions in Lower Merion.

There are so many great things about mini sessions! The short time frame of the mini session is great for younger children who may not have the patience or stamina for a full session. Mini sessions are almost always more affordable when compared to full-length sessions. In addition, mini sessions will usually offer some different packages to choose from. Several photos may be included with the session fee with the option to purchase additional photos. Mini sessions are perfect for specific events like holidays or milestones. Full sessions are better suited for general family portraits or creating keepsakes like wall art and photo albums. To see examples of photos from full sessions check out some of my favorite moments. Mini sessions are also a fantastic way to test the waters and see if professional family photography is right for you without a major commitment.

That being said, there are some cons to mini sessions. Some flexibility is lost due to the short duration of a mini session. Family dynamics, including the size of your family and the age and comfort level of your children with the camera, should also influence your choice. Large families or families with young children who may need time to relax might benefit more from a full session.

Finally, consider the desired experience. A full session allows for a more relaxed and in-depth experience, providing opportunities for both posed and candid shots that tell a fuller story of your family. Mini sessions are quick and fun but usually consist of more posed photos. Additionally, mini sessions almost always consist of one location selected by the photographer. As a Lower Merion photographer, I find that full sessions allow time to move to different spots and try to get a wider variety of photos. Mini sessions can occasionally feel rushed if it takes a bit for a child to warm up.

Choosing between a mini session and a full session depends on your family’s unique needs and preferences. Consider the time commitment, budget, and purpose of the photos, as well as your family dynamics and desired experience. Whether you opt for the quick and cost-effective mini session or the comprehensive and personalized full session, the most important thing is capturing beautiful, memorable moments with your loved ones. If you need help deciding which option is best for your family, feel free to reach out for a consultation. As your local Lower Merion photographer, I am always around to offer advice or talk through any concerns or questions you may have when it comes to choosing between a mini session and a full-length session.
